Diego Rivera His Story-Celebration of SD Playwrights
“Diego Rivera His Story”
Writer: Herbert Siguenza and Carlos Baron
Director: Sam Woodhouse
Cast: Herbert Siguenza
Veteran Chicano actor and playwright HERBERT SIGUENZA will read and perform the one-man show Diego Rivera His Story. This personal and exciting presentation is about the legacy and influence of Diego Rivera on the author and the entire art world. The play examines Rivera’s amazing life and legendary murals that sparked an international movement mixing art and politics. The play also explores the relationships Rivera had with amazing women like Frida Kahlo and others.
Set in the aftermath of the funeral of his iconic wife, Frida Kahlo, Rivera returns to his studio, grappling with grief, confusion and a looming sense of mortality. In his solitude, Rivera is visited by Cantinflas, a charismatic figure embodying Mexican consciousness and the common man. Through a compelling blend of visuals and music, Rivera recounts his vibrant journey through art, history, politics, and his complicated relationships with his many art sponsors such as Nelson Rockefeller. The play offers an intimate look at a revolutionary artist whose mural movement elevated Mexico on the global stage. Diego Rivera His Story is a tribute to one of Mexico's most influential visual artists of the 20th century, brought to life by the acclaimed veteran actor and playwright Herbert Siguenza of the Chicano group Culture Clash.
